Meet a Community Art Star: Min Jung Son

Min Jung has been volunteering with ArtStarts since 2016. Full of creativity, Min Jung always brings her keen interest in the arts to all the projects she works on at ArtStarts.

Hi Min Jung! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a student majoring in Illustration, with a minor in typography and design, at Emily Carr University of Arts + Design. During my free time, I like to go out and draw in my sketchbook.

Where did art start for you? 

For me, art has been a part of my life since I was little. I loved drawing everywhere in the house - on the walls, on the table - anywhere. I still have the table in my house where I drew on the bottom.

If you could go back in time and tell your five-year-old self something, what would you say?

Do not be afraid to express yourself despite what other people might say.

What does creativity mean to you?

To me creativity is something that lets me express my thoughts and ideas into reality. There is no limit or rules in creativity. I love the feeling of starting with a white paper or a canvas and filling it with whatever my heart and my hand desires to do.

How do you connect yourself to creativity in your day-to-day life?

I connect myself to creativity through the everyday and ordinary aspects of life. I believe that everything around me is art. I also like to collect things that are pretty or unique so that I could later use either as a reference or as a material for my art piece.

What do you like about volunteering at ArtStarts?

It has been over a year since I first started volunteering at ArtStarts and it has been a great experience. The interesting part of being with children and working with them is that I had a chance to look back into my life and ponder over what really made me to pursue myself into art. It allowed me to see the world with child-like wonder just like I once did when I was little.

How do you think young people &/or families benefit from being involved in the arts?

Art encourages young people to take a different a perspective, widen their knowledge and express themselves. Families can benefit through various fun activities, giving the child and their parents to develop individuality and creative expression as well as great memories. Moreover, art is not simply just a fancy painting or a well-crafted object. While we can appreciate the beauty and its efforts put into, it is more than that. It is interdisciplinary field where people can learn about history, science, culture, fashion, social issues, politics, ideologies, psychology, and the list goes on.
